"You don't just visit Edinburgh; you fall in love with the place."

The best-selling author of Eccentric Britain takes you away from the obvious tartanalia and into Auld Reekie's hidden corners to find spooky stories, weird buildings, mad judges and strange customs. Benedict le Vay also asks the pressing questions that others avoid:

Is the Scottish Parliament a monumental cock-up? Was the Stewart dynasty really useless? Should you eat deep-fried Mars Bars...?

• Best pubs, eateries and hotels

• Beaches, walks and days out

• Calendar of annual eccentric events

• Coverage of the Edinburgh Festival

Press acclaim for le Vay's previous Bradt Eccentric guides: 'Wonderfully barmy', 'The ultimate guide', 'A must', 'Endlessly fascinating', 'One of the best'.

Reviews

"Benedict le Vay has clearly had fun putting this guide together, and taken every opportunity to tease the Scots without mercy….He has an eye for the ludicrous, stamina for some pretty thorough research and enough of a sense of humour for this never to seem malicious….Eccentric Edinburgh also operates as a full working guidebook to the Scottish capital."
Sunday Times

"His affection for the city (is) obvious throughout….One of the strengths of this book is that it doesn’t simply concentrate on the many aspects of Edinburgh that have been done to death and beyond, in hundreds of guides over hundreds of years….Ben le Vay…has excelled himself this time."
Daily Mail

"It reveals fascinating facts about local icons…..it also includes some serious practical information and a full index."

Benedict le Vay

About the Author

Benedict le Vay is a Fleet Street newspaper sub-editor who has worked in four continents but wrote his first book, Eccentric Britain, by accident after collecting oddities about his own countrymen - including hobbies such as cone collecting, snail racing and bog snorkelling - for many years. He says he was 'staggered' by the response, which included media attention from the Shetland Times to Gulf Radio, from live Californian chatshows to New Zealand publicity tours.
