Madagascar at a Glance

Once described as 'Noah's Ark adrift in the Indian Ocean', the list of endemic species here is extraordinary: 97% of animals are unique to the island, and over half of the birds. Most visitors who come to Madagascar list wildlife viewing as their main objective, and the authorities are steadily adding to the number of national parks and protected areas so tourists can be confident of seeing lemurs, chameleons and other prime attractions.

Notes from the Authors

Go to Madagascar and help stop the destruction of the rainforest!

December 2009

If you think that flying abroad is irresponsible, take a look at the video clip below, showing what is happening in Madagascar's rain forests now that there are no tourists or guides to provide informal 'policing'.

Throughout the political instability of 2009 tourism has virtually ceased and 'rosewood barons' have been able to enter empty national parks and plunder valuable rosewood and ebony. Deforestation is one of the biggest causes of climate change; tourism used to be Madagascar's main hard currency earner, funding numerous conservation projects. Without tourism the country is in serious trouble. Do your bit and visit this beautiful island.

"The book answers the questions of all visitors to Madagascar; whether holidaymakers or serious naturalists. Madagascar may lie a mere 400 kilometres off the coast of Africa, but it is separated from it by millions of years of evolution: nature's private sanctuary. In compiling this book we have selected only the most interesting, appealing or beautiful animals, generally limiting our choice to those easily seen by visitors. And to help in the choice of places to visit, an introductory chapter describes the most accessible reserves and the key species likely to be seen there."
