Galápagos at a Glance

This archipelago of Pacific Ocean islands lying 1000 kilometres west of Ecuador were the inspiration of Charles Darwin's great work The Origin of Species. Having evolved without fear for man, the birds and reptiles of the Galapagos can be approached with ease; visitors snorkel with sealions, step over boobies, and eyeball giant tortoises. Only a few of the islands are inhabited and there is only a handful of hotels; tourists sleep on boats and visit one or two new islands each day.

Notes from the Authors

"It is quite remarkable that visitors are able to approach to within a metre, birds sitting on eggs or involved in elaborate courtship rituals, without altering their behaviour. Because of the tropical setting of the Galapagos there is generally very reduced seasonality of breeding, so visitors can see various species of breeding birds during any month of the year. The Galapagos offers a truly intimate look not only at the endemic birds, but also at many other species which are synonymous with the islands, particularly the frigatebirds and boobies."
