Notes from the Author

"Visiting the Maldives is going to spoil you for anywhere else. For the visitor everything is so simple, relaxed and stress-free. The Maldivians are a genuine and hospitable people, although reserved, so don't expect instant - and thus quick dissolving - friendships. Even if you do not want to laze in the tropical sun on a white, coral-sand beach, snorkel in turquoise lagoons, dive to discover fascinating reefs, go big-game fishing or windsurfing, be marooned on a real desert island or sip exotic cocktails before having a gourmet-quality dinner, there is still much to see, do and enjoy, gaining an insight into a way of life that seems idyllic to visitors and of which the Maldivians themselves are rather proud.

Royston Ellis is a travel writer and biographer with a specialist knowledge of the Indian Ocean islands. He contributes regularly to airline magazines and has written Bradt's Sri Lanka guide, having lived there now for many years."
