Guidebook Updates
Notes from the Authors
"Visit Mozambique today and you'll probably find it difficult to imagine that only 20 years ago this now rather obscure country attracted a greater volume of tourists than South Africa and Rhodesia combined; that less than ten years ago this country was in the closing stages of a civil war which claimed the lives of 100,000 people; that in February 2000 large tracts of land in the southern part of the country were submerged by 8m of water; and that nowadays, of all the countries in the world, nowhere is tourism developing as quickly as it is in Mozambique. So where, and when will this rollercoaster ride end?
Mozambique may not be the easiest country in which to travel; in the northeast is can be downright frustrating. But this will change, and even as things stand Mozambique is not a country without rewards. Looking to the future, I wish Mozambicians every bit of success in redeveloping their country and its tourist industry, and I hope very much that by writing this book I will encourage more people to visit them. For now, not the least of Mozambique's attractions is that it still offers ample scope for genuinely exploratory travel; it is that rare country that adventurous travellers can experience entirely for themselves, without the distorting medium of a developed tourist industry."
