This highly praised guide is written by Chris McIntyre, a tour operator who specialises in southern Africa. His unbeatable knowledge of the country is augmented by ecologist Jonathan Hughes who describes how animals and plants survive the desert conditions. Namibia is the ideal country for a self-drive holiday, so this book is predominantly aimed at those travellers. Fifty clear maps and detailed listings of the lodges, guest farms and bushcamps make this guide the essential purchase.

Namibia at a Glance

Drive through Namibia's wide expanses of pristine wilderness and you could spend hours without seeing a soul. Instead of people there are unique plants and animals; intimate lodges and guest farms take the place of large hotels. From the capital, Windhoek, visitors can choose to explore seemingly endless dunes, deep canyons, well-stocked game parks, the wild Skeleton Coast or the verdant attractions of the Caprivi Strip.

Reviews

"An invaluable resource."

The New York Times

"Travelling independently to Namibia and exploring some of the remoter corners of this fascinating country by 4x4, we came to depend on the Bradt Guide. This was especially the case when we ventured into Bushmanland in the north east to visit the remote Khaudum National Park. Arriving late into Tsumkwe and unable to gain access to the lodge, we were forced to drive hard up the sand tracks into the gathering gloom, eyes glued to the GPS and totally reliant on the coordinates thankfully detailed in this comprehensive guidebook. We toasted Chris McIntyre with a few beers when we finally arrived at the Sikerti Camp!"
Exodus

"Best guidebook."
The Sunday Times

"The most detailed guide available."
Wanderlust

"Both thorough and authoritative."
Travel and Leisure

"By far the most thorough and informative."

Annie Woodhouse, London

Adam Folickman, Greece

"...invaluable..."

David Rogers, Somerset

"Excellent! Cannot find any fault. Allowed me to experience more than what my self drive itinerary could. Very much treasured."

Nimixa Hira, Pinner

"The best I have read so far."

Notes from the Author

"The Namib Desert has plants and animals found nowhere else on earth. Here is the world's oldest desert, where endemic wildlife has evolved to survive - like the contorted Welwitschia mirabilis that live for millennia, the elusive golden mole and the unique fog-basking beetles. Vast tracts of land remain protected as national parks, supplemented by conservancies where the scattered local communities protect the wildlife in their own areas. With such schemes, the Kaokoveld nurtures a thriving population of desert-adapted elephants and black rhino, while the Caprivi Strip's wildlife is found far beyond the borders of its parks. Best of all Namibia's wilderness is still easy to explore independently, and it always appears empty. Even in Eosha, one of Africa's top parks, driving around is easy; you just stop beside the water-holes for as long as you like. Animals wander all around, as you sip a cold drink and focus your camera."
