This clean basic hotel is located the edge of the city park near the river, bars and restaurants. Single 45, double 60. Basic rooms, directly opposite the entrance to the main hospital. Secure parking available. Single 30, double or twin 45. Breakfast can be brought up from Žužu bakery downstairs. Hotel RM (8 rooms) Jorgandžiska 12/14; tel: 02 3117 133 or 02 3131 288. Right in the old town next to the bezisten old covered market. Small, old, and tidy. 15 per person in rooms without bathrooms, 20 per person in en suite rooms. Breakfast extra.

Makedonska Kukja Blvd Makedonija, behind the old railway station; tel: 02 3296 415 or 070 208 519. Decked out in traditional Macedonian décor with matching food and live music in the evenings. Kamnik Kamnik bb; tel: 02 252 3522. Serving wild boar sausages, Macedonian venison, rabbit cream stew, and more. Try their cold cut sausages, salamis and hams for a range of game choices. Also has a wide choice of Macedonian and foreign wines. Lots of stuffed animal trophies deck the walls. Hidden in Avtokomanda district, turn immediately before the Lukoil petrol station on the way from the airport into town. Žabar (meaning frog) Kej 13 Noemvri bb; tel: 02 3132 411. The only restaurant actually overlooking the Vardar river. Good ribs. No frog! Kaj Maršalot Bd Kliment Ohridski; tel: 02 322 3829. Decked out in true Yugonostalgia with busts of Tito and waiters in red pioneer scarves. Traditional music and food add to the atmosphere. Great full cooked breakfasts. The Piano Room with a view onto the lake is the one of the nicest rooms in Ohrid. Ask in advance if you want breakfast included. Piano room and luxury double (sleep 4) 60. Double 25. Brand new rooms at the top of the old town overlooking the amphitheatre and the lake. One twin, two doubles and one suite, all with an extra fold out armchair-bed. 44-64 per room with breakfast. Set down the little alley on the way to the Catholic church, these apartments are clean, modern and some have a view of the lake from the balcony. 20 per person without breakfast. Gladiator Ul Brakja Miladinovi 14, directly overlooking the amphitheatre; tel: 046 266 942. Despite the bullish title, this charming restaurant has terrace views up high of the lake and serves traditional Macedonian food in a traditional setting with the best of Macedonia’s trad/mod ethno-music-mix. Ohrid trout 2000MKD per kilo. Gladiator Tava (mixed meat stew) 450MKD. Makedonsko Filet (pork) 380MKD.
