Mike Stead on Writing Angola
I was unprepared when I got off the plane in Luanda.
In 2007 in a moment of enthusiastic madness I emailed Bradt Travel Guides and asked if they would be interested in a travel guide on Angola – one of a few countries without its own dedicated guidebook. To my shock, the answer came back: 'Yes!'.
Research progressed slowly; bookshops had nothing and my local library suggested an academic tome that had been borrowed once since its publication in the 1970s. The internet was bare too: dead links and out-of-date information – much of it inaccurate or plainly wrong and most of it written in Portuguese.
Over the next year I worked in Luanda. Fleeing the traffic-clogged capital as often as I could, I travelled widely (stopping for cold beers and grilled lobster only when absolutely necessary). Whereas I travelled in comfortable 4x4s or flew, my fellow author Sean Rorison shared the back of long-distance buses and collective taxis with chickens and village elders – Sean ably assisted with some of the more challenging provinces. (Sorry Sean!)

The StuffYourRucksack Spotlight
StuffYourRucksack.com enables travellers to give practical help to places they visit by bringing things that are really needed.
It's not about taking sweets and pens to encourage children to beg; nor is it about handing out money to people who might tell a good story but whose scruples are far from good.
It is about helping small, legitimate organisations that get little or no help from their government or from local or international NGO's.
It's about travellers helping other travellers to give practical assistance to people who have the least, but often give the most.
Remember Bradt are offering an exclusive 30% discount via StuffYourRucksack.com, and we will donate an additional 10% of the value of your order back to this worthwhile charity. Visit their site to learn more.
